Siobhan Wallace

Inspired by her Nan’s personal jewellery collection, she utilises her own biological data to create nameplate jewellery, which playfully explores how the invisible information that makes her who she is can be externalised and articulated.

She transformed an impersonal list of genetic traits into tag necklaces worn close to the heart: ‘detached earlobe, aversion to cilantro, chocolate over vanilla, motion sickness, fear of heights, no cleft chin’. Siobhan further literalises jewelry tropes already steeped in practices of self-expression – her gold rope chains are double helices and her signet rings feature no family crest, but instead state in sweeping script: ‘1% British’. Through these creations, she interrogates not only the perception of who she is, but how we all perceive each other. What is implied when the data that defines us is made visible, and what might we choose to omit?
