SO MINT! DANIELA VOLSHENK

SO MINT! is a series on fresh graduates in fashion, jewellery and design from around the world. Handpicked by Current Obsession.

Daniela Volshenk is a New York based South African fine jewellery designer whose practice explores notions of home and family through the lens of travel and storytelling. Often inspired by hardware and mechanisms, her designs are developed through focus on bold form and an intentional use of setting techniques to honour precious natural materials. Daniela’s process involves a careful balance between manual techniques like hand carving and traditional goldsmith skills alongside computer aided design software like Rhino 3D to create pieces with precision. Mechanisms, clasps and the technical workings of settings take after those found in traditional fine jewellery as she places herself in a broader jewellery context.

Current Obsession: What story or idea does your graduation work explore, and why was it important for you to tell it now?

Daniela Volshenk: My collection, which I call Bound, is a personal exploration of my relationship with home, rooted in my nomadic Afrikaans heritage. I draw inspiration from the mechanisms of the cattle-drawn wagons that once transported my family, and I work with materials native to South Africa—mopane wood, citrine stone, and metal hardware. Through these elements, I craft pieces that bind medium and design to honour the secure yet ever-changing sense of belonging, and the warm, nostalgic feeling of travelling home.

CO: Who or what has shaped your practice in unexpected ways?

DV: My love for jewellery is most unexpected by my mother, who made jewellery while I was growing up, for which I showed absolutely no interest in! Yet, this is probably where my love for coloured gemstones began. Jewellery is somewhat of a new practice of mine. It wasn’t until 5 years ago when I was introduced to a metal workshop where I truly became fascinated with the processes of transforming materials that is jewellery.

CO: Does your work reflect or respond to a cultural context or issue that’s personal to you?

DV: My work has always been very personal, I often look to my ancestors who were nomadic farmers or my grandpa who was a pilot. This is where my handling of simple materials, like the South African Mopane Hardwood, meets my fascination with mechanisms and methods of joining. I explore the notion of home and family through the lens of travel and journey, using storytelling as a vehicle for our connection to the past.
