Emmie Ray Hubbard
Emmie Ray Hubbard is a British artist working between London and the Peak District. She received her BA from Central Saint Martins and her MA from Royal College of Art in London, where she worked in collaboration with archaeologists and craftsmen to rediscover historic craft techniques. Her work calls for a resounding discussion about sustainability and future urgencies guided by historic beliefs and practices.

Despite her work’s raw forms, earthen textures and ancient techniques, it would be a mistake to describe Emmie’s approach as purely historical or past-oriented, as the issues she contends with through her practice are highly futuristic: what will we leave behind for our ancestors to discover? Will our impact on our Earth even permit us to have such ancestors?

As we become aware of the effect our species has upon our planet, Emmie searches for guidance from our ancestors. She delves into myths, recalling the words and actions echoed by generations before us.

Emmie believes that there is a sublimity in appreciating what thousands of years feels like in the hand; gritty clay earth smooshed between fingertips, molten metal poured with the knowledge that it will destroy its mold upon separation. When human extinction is written on our streets, the idea of being ancient becomes an interesting character to play.
